The majority of Korean people (81%) went to summer vacation during the three months from June to August. 74% went to Domestic travel, while 19% went to overseas travel, and the people who had been doing both domestic · overseas were 13%. Most visited domestic travel destinations were Gangwon-do, Jeju-do and Gyeongsannam-do, in the order. For overseas, Japan, China and Europe were in the order from the highest. Gangwon-do in domestic and Japan in overseas were the popular travel destinations with largest number of people (1/4 or more) visited.
The rate of traveling 1 night or over for summer vacation was higher among men (82%) than among women (79%), while it was high among married (85%), kids in childhood (88%), 5 million won or over monthly household income (85% or over). On the other hand, in their 20s (75%), unmarried (75%), 3 million won or less monthly household income (67%) were lower. Going on summer vacation trip appears to be associated with age · family relationships · income. People who did not go had mostly psychological · economic reasons such as "lack of time (35%)", `to avoid the peak season (21%)` and `burdensome travel cost (20%).
The contents of the summer vacation trip was different in various aspects by domestic and overseas. Of domestic travel, ? starting point, from end of July to beginning of August, was concentrated to the conventional peak season (from 4th week of July to 2nd week of August) at more than half (51%). On the other hand, overseas travel was at 30% during this period, being more distributed compared to domestic travel. In addition, ? domestic travel in many cases was gone together with `two` or `four` "family members" (spouse/children) in "short schedule", whereas ? overseas travel was gone with `two` members of "family or friends" in relatively "long schedule".

For domestic travel, Gangwon-do was by far the most popular area at 26%, followed by Jeju-do (10%), Gyeongsangnam-do (9%), Gyeonggi-do (9%) and Gyeongsangnam-do (8%), in order at similar level. Central travel ? locations include sea (36%), mountain/valley (20%) and amusement complex (16%), while ? the main purpose of travel was mainly enjoying natural scenery (35%), resting (16%), gourmet (16%). In overall, women & 20`s to 30`s in gourmet, 30`s in resting and 40`s in enjoying natural scenery, had their highest purpose.
Among overseas destinations, Japan also took more than a quarter (26%), followed by China (11%), Europe (11%), Philippines (7 percent) and Thailand (6%), in order. Except for Europe, they are mostly Asian countries, which are geographically adjacent, while ? men in China and Philippines ? woman in Europe, Taiwan & Hong Kong, had their preference, distinctively. In addition, 20`s in Japan and 60`s & older in China, had more particular interest. In oversea destinations also, they enjoyed natural scenery (20%) or urban landscape (16%) and resting (15%) mostly, while ? men had more active vacation including resting & hobby/sport and meeting with relatives/friends, and ? women had more consumption/sensory activities such as enjoying urban landscape, gourmet & shopping.
